Sandalwood is the name is of an expensive tree from
the family of genus Santalum.
The woods of this tree are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and unlike many
other aromatic woods, they have retained their fragrance for decades. In
Uganda, Sandalwood is commonly found in Karamoja region most especially in
Areas of Moroto,Nakapiripiti, and Kotido. Because of the fact that, this tree is
similar to Gold and Diamonds in terms of its value, it is being harvested excessively
by the local community for firewood and the business personnel are hunting it for
commercial values and it is, also, being smuggled from Uganda to other parts of
the world. After when our neighbors in Kenya learnt about this tree, there is now
a very big effort in the Kenya government to see to it that this endangered
tree is being protected. It takes years and decades to groom this tree. This
tree has been and is still used for medicinal purposes and also, Sandalwood
oil is highly valued. Am now calling
the international community to come and join me in my effort of Whistle blowing
to see to it that, we pressure the Government of Uganda through its Ministry of
Lands and Environmental protection and its concerned bodies like NEMA to come
up and conserve this treasure of Uganda. You can write to Uganda’s MP’s and
policy makers about this issue now. If we join hands, we shall be able to win
like the way we did to Mabira forest.
Yours Faithfully
